There is massive scope
for pleasant and interesting walks in the area. The village is very close to the Timberland Trail and also the Trans Pennine Trail (see below). Please respect private property and the countryside code.

Walk 1 - Barley Hole Spring Woods |
|
| Walk up the Coach Road up the wooded part and take the footpath on the right. This will take you through a field bordering the private wood, which in spring will be thick with bluebells. Climb over the stile into a field again rich in wild flowers, follow it to the right behind the houses towards rather ramshackle shelter for horses. Sometimes there will be a large white horse looking down on you. Follow the path round to the left for a few metres to the style and the road. This is the Hamlet of Hoodhill. Keep left and pick up a gravelled path which bears left past old mine workings in the field. Take the path through the gate and walk round the perimeter of the wood until you reach some houses on a dirt track. This is Spittal Houses or Derricroft, which was apparently a hospital in days gone by. When you reach the metalled road turn left back to Harley and the finish. | |
